Folding@home

What you’re seeing is a programme called Folding@home. the programme uses your computer’s graphic card’s processors to analyse protein folds of various proteins. So what happends is when you run the programme your computer receives a certain protein and starts to analyse it, when its done analyzing it send its work back to Stanford University where it’ll be used for cancer research and various other diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s. For more information google “Folding@home”

Its quite a good thing a feel. It doesn’t really eat up a lot of bandwidth. And since we don’t normally fully utilise our graphics cards anyways (unless you play super high end games 24/7, and not even i do that), why not use it for a good cause right? There’s also a ranking system in all this, sorta adds a little competition to encourage people to do more folding. you have personal ranks and team ranks. My team, number 2999, is Folding@Malaysia, we’re currently ranked number 56 of 157320 teams, I rank 327 of 1000 members in the team and 204419 of 1225164 of all the participants in the world, but I’m still rising pretty fast thanks to my dear graphics card. One drawback I probabaly should mention is that this means ur graphics card would probabaly be working pretty hard while its folding nonstop, means means it’ll probabaly take up more electricity than it normally would, so those of you who pay your own electric bill might wanna think twice? but yea I feel its a pretty small price to pay to play a role in helping out in medical research. Another thing you should take note is that since your graphics card is operating on heavy load, expect some extra heat being produced and possibly fan noise, especially if you’re folding on a laptop, as you can see even my card is now at ~78 degrees. Note to Sien, probabaly not such a good idea for you to do this given your history of burnt motherboards.

EDIT: okay apparently you can’t see my card temperature from here, but yea the temp is about 78 degrees celcius right now, with fan speed at about 52% at the moment.

Folding@home is compatible with all Nvidia 8XXX/9XXX and GTX2XX series and ATi 2XXX/3XXX/4XXX series cards,it also works with a PS3!!
